Earlier today I tried Granovita Mock Duck for the first time, I was always curious as to what it would taste and look like so I was excited to try it. Mock Duck is braised gluten which is preserved in a runny gravy, it can be attained from most health food stores.
Taste: When trying a new faux meat product the most important aspect of it is the taste. Mock Duck does a great job of mimicking Duck, it does not have the full flavour of actual Duck but it does taste like it which makes it a great meat substitute and means that it is suitable for people who are transitioning. The gravy which the Mock Duck is preserved in is ok, it just tastes like normal gravy, when I next get some Mock Duck I will be draining the gravy out!
Texture: I have had Duck straight off the bone and in a curry in the past and my experience of textures were very different for each. The Duck in the curry was very fatty whereas the Duck off the bone was much more lean. The Mock Duck was much more like the Duck in the curry, it had a fatty texture and was actually very convincing!
Looks: Granovita do an amazing job with Mock Duck when it comes to its looks. It looks just like Duck should look, if you showed it to an unsuspecting meat eater they would most likely believe that it was real!
Cost: Mock Duck is fairly inexpensive compared to actual meat, one tin which is around £2 provides 6 large chunks of the stuff. I finished the whole tin in one sitting but if I had it again I would most likely only use half as it is fairly sickly.
Overall this is a product that I would recommend, especially if you are craving meat. It isn't too expensive and is one of the most believable fake meats I have personally tried. Just be careful with how much you eat because as with any processed food there are health risks, in Mock Duck it is that it is made out of gluten and recently there have been worries about gluten in the human diet.
If you have tried Mock Duck and do not like it a good alternative which I was completely blown away by was Vbites Duck pieces in hoisin sauce.
